ADAGIO & ALLEGRO

The present CD comprises a selection from the popular miniatures of romantic cello literature. However, the concept of romanticism has been slightly extended to also include into this imaginary club Kodály's and Rachmaninov's lyrical pieces. The works are performed by the third-prize winner of the Eurovision Young Musicians 2014 Gergely Devich, accompanied by his mother Mária Kovalszki on piano.

De Profundis

'De Profundis' - its title taken from a 1998 piece by the young Lithuanian composer Raminta Serksnyte featured on the album - is designed to be, as Kremer puts it in his notes, 'fuel for the soul,' drawing from a deep artistic and emotional well. The composers, whose works span nearly two centuries, are: Jean Sibelius, Arvo Part, Raminta Serksnyte (whose piece, 'De Profundis,' lends the album its title), Robert Schumann, Michael Nyman, Franz Schubert, Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer, Dmitri Shostakovich, Lera Auerbach, Astor Piazzolla, Georgs Pelecis, and Alfred Schnittke.

Kremer writes of them, 'Out of the depths' these artists cry out for a better world... Their spiritual missive, like oil, can sustain humans by appealing to their profoundest emotions, by letting them open up, 12 pieces selected for this album sends its own individual message to the listener, one that my colleagues from Kremerata Baltica and I have tried to illuminate.'

The album also features the youthful Kremerata Baltica, the chamber ensemble of fellow Latvian musicians he founded. Kremer's 2009 Nonesuch release with Kremerata Baltica was the acclaimed two-disc 'Mozart: The Complete Violin Concertos,' which BBC Music Magazine, in a five-star review, called 'an altogether impressive achievement.' The New York Times concurred: 'Gidon Kremer's great interpretative strength has always been his ability to make a work, however familiar, entirely his own.'

Kremer and Kremerata Baltica will perform selections from 'De Profundis' on their 2010-11 tour, which will include visits to most major American markets. Regarding the ensemble's interpretative powers, the Los Angeles Times has declared, 'They are utterly alive to the possibilities in the scores. They make every detail stand out; they play with an overpowering sense of joy... and they are deep.'

BRAHMS Violin Sonatas Nos. 2 & 3

“[a] beautifully balanced performance, and the warmth and intimacy of the recording is an excellent match.” --CD Review, 5th September 2015

“Melnikov’s 1875 Bösendorfer piano sounds splendidly grainy, transparent and powerful, often overwhelming Faust’s gut-stringed violin in Brahms’s louder moments, but blending ideally in the elegiac slow movements.” --The Guardian, 27th September 2015 ***

“Enthralling, lovely performances.” --Gramophone Magazine, October 2015

BBC Music Magazine Chamber Choice - November 2015

“The first Brahms sonata recorded by Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov on period instruments made a big impression...Melnikov’s 1875 Bösendorfer piano sounds splendidly grainy, transparent and powerful, often overwhelming Faust’s gut-stringed violin in Brahms’s louder moments, but blending ideally in the elegiac slow movements.” --The Observer, 27th September 2015 ***

“Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov (playing an 1875 Bösendorfer) make a strong case for the work as a whole, though even their impassioned advocacy can’t quite save Dietrich’s opening movement from sounding long- winded. In Brahms’s Second and Third Violin Sonatas, the players’ sound world may be a little too muscularly lean for some tastes. Still, the musical argument is always lucid.” --Irish Times, 21st October 2015

SCHUMANN, SCHUBERT & BRAHMS Piano music

“With her warm, flexible tone, Lise Berthaud gives a performance of enormous expressive range and tosses off the more showy passages with virtuoso panache...All in all, it's a wonderfully played recital, drawing the listener into the world of each composer.” --Gramophone Magazine, February 2014

“The voice of the ‘middle finger’ (according to Percy Grainger) has rarely been heard to better advantage than on Lise Berthaud and Adam Laloum’s programme of Brahms, Schubert and Schumann. Berthaud’s warm, flexible tone is a joy to hear, and she and Laloum pass on a strong involvement with the emotions of all three works.”  --Gramophone December 2014

SCHUMANN, VOLKMANN, DIETRICH & GERNSHEIM Cello Concertos

“Gerhardt invests Volkmann's mixture of melodic lyricism, wit and technical bravado with a brilliant sense of pacing and the urgent accompaniment of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hannu Lintu easily outclasses the rival account on CPO.” --BBC Music Magazine, April 2007 *****

“Alban Gerhardt throws himself into the fray with thrilling virtuoso abandon and the recording is out of Hyperion’s top drawer.” --Classic FM Magazine

“The continuous offerings of Hyperion to music culture are admirable.” --ClassicsToday.com

“Alban Gerhardt’s playing is rich-toned, impeccably judged even in the most obscure works, and completely assured … [Dietrich]’s Cello Concerto is relatively accessible music but boasts plenty of subtlety and fine melodies; the Romance is a particular gem and must have been a joy to rediscover … Gerhardt’s performance makes it sound (in the best way) as if it had always been there … even for a Volume 1 this would have been a fine programme; for a Volume 2 it is indecently good and the performances are both brilliant and committed. I can only look forward to Volume 3” --International Record Review
